Though surviving attacks by midget submarines in Sydney Harbour and serving in the battle of the Coral Sea and Savo Island in 1942, it was at the Battle of Rennell Island that she was sunk on 30 January 1943, when she was struck by Japanese aerial torpedoes whilst escorting a convoy bound for Guadalcanal.
